lyrics

As we pulled into East Lawn
One gloomy Sunday,
Two men in black appeared
Under the marble archway.
My sister and I said thank you
As they escorted us.
Sheltered from the rain,
All is shadow under their umbrellas.

Passing through the hall
Of long-forgotten urns,
I thought it would be better
to be burned than in the dirt.
As we reached the inner sanctum
The funeral was underway.
The priestess told us to go up
And pray.

“I love you”
Would have been enough for him I think,
But when I opened up my mouth,
No words came out.
So I just went up to the altar
Holding two
White roses:
One for the car, one for the coffin.
