last night, i was stalked by a german shepherd.
i walked three long blocks looking over my shoulder
and tried to block out the thought about my mother,
how a dog came out of the fog and nearly killed her.
wielding a wine bottle like a club in my hand,
i tried to feel less like a boy and more like a man.
but when it bared its teeth i began to understand
that it was simply instinct, it just saw me and ran.
but it didn't attack
so i just followed the way back
past my neighbor's cadillac
until it faded into the black.

another late night under pisces moonlight.
the stars burn too bright as if out of spite.
dwelling on the melting ice fields
or festering oil spills isn’t exactly ideal
nor is it making mountains out of molehills
because it’s real, it’s all too real
my body creaks like an old willow tree
the sap sticks to me every time i let myself weep
and my hair’s longer than it’s ever been
i feel it thinning by the minute
even if we could begin again
would anything be different in the end?
